The Darkest Darkness.
We've discussed a lot of coffee here at Friggen Cawfee, and today will be no different, but this time we're taking a look into a type of coffee we don't discuss very often: A Dark Roasted Coffee
In fact, this may be the first time we're specifically discussing and writing a review on a dark roast coffee, as pretty much every other review or discussion on specific coffee flavors involves a medium or light roasted coffee flavor.
Now this specific brew of dark roast is actually an arabica dark roast coffee as opposed to Robusta.
Dunkin chose this because they wanted to be patient in their roasting process to bring out the full flavors of the light and sweeter arabica beans to make a dark roast to really stay up for.
And they have not disappointed me with their new brew.
Dunkin Donuts Midnight Roast is a very new product on their flavor line, being released just recently at the end of 2022 on the edge of early Winter.
I'll get into the flavor notes in details in a bit, but I can already tell you that it tastes super fantastic, and it has an incredibly rich flavor profile.
The Dark Backstory.
You might think that Friggen Cawfee is a Dunkin Donuts website with how much we write about, review, and talk about Dunkin here, but the truth is they're just my personal favorite when it comes to roasted ground coffee, but we're almost to the end on flavor reviews for Dunkin Donuts, and soon I'm going to be pushing out some major review paths for Peet's awesome roasted coffee beans and then I'll be launching a Starbucks flavored ground coffee review campaign after that, so stay tuned for what's up and coming.
Let's get back to Dunkin for now though.
So, what brought Dunkin to make this amazing new dark brew to try? After all Dunkin isn't heavily known for making many if any most of the time, dark roasts.
Dunkin Donuts Midnight Coffee was inspired by their search to create a "Unique and full-bodied flavor" to their lineup, and they knew with their team they could create something majestic.
The new Dunkin Donuts Dark roast is described as a slowly roasted and caramelized marshmallow that's been slowly cooked to perfection.
Basically, making it so tender it falls off the bone so to speak.
Our Review on Dunkin Donuts Midnight Dark Roast.
First let me say, we do not give coffee flavors a review without thinking thoroughly through our testing process.
To outline, how we review a coffee flavor or coffee in general must be tested and judged on the following aspects.
1. The Taste: If a coffee tastes like crap it's going to be reviewed like crap, but this category can easily be subject to an individual's personal preferences and tastes, so this requires multiple people who can agree in general on the flavor being good or bad. What's important here isn't specific flavors or tastes, it's whether or not multiple people who have distinctly different food preferences decide that it's a good flavor.
2. The Pairings: This is a very strong and perhaps the most important category for us. A coffee must be able to stand on its own with a wide variety of pairings, and the broader a range of pairings a coffee has available the higher we rate it. Versatility and multifunctionality in pairings are very important to us, because it's much harder to make a product that goes well with many things than it is to make something go well with only a few things.
With that being said we do also take into account how well it pairs with what it pairs well with.
3. Seasonal Versatility: This ties in closely with our pairings category, and still follows the same guidelines of how something can stand on its own. This is also true with the season it's consumed in, as weather, temperature, and season greatly affect the psychological side of food and beverage choices in human beings. If a product is chosen in all or multiple seasons as opposed to one, we rate that coffee product higher. If a coffee pairs well with all seasons it gets multiple points just for being able to do that alone.
With that being understood let's continue to our review!
The Taste: Dunkins Midnight tastes amazing. Dunkin describes it being a full bodied and richly flavored coffee drink with dark chocolate and sweet flavors. We completely agree with this statement, but we'll also add that it tends to be very savory, rich and definitely something impactful that leaves you going back for sip after sip. This coffee has an absolutely great flavor profile with it and the richness just leaves you with a great experience.
It's an excellent flavor and we find that overall, it tastes better than a lot of other coffee's out there of similar build.
The Pairings: Dunkins Dark Roast goes well with quite a lot. Dunkin recommends pairing it with a jelly donut, or bacon, a statement we can agree with as well, but we'd like to further explain some awesome pairings for this great coffee.
Midnight stands really strong here and has a wide selection of pairings. Pretty much any kind of common or uncommon breakfast foods go great with it, so eggs, shrimp and grits, toast, avocado, bacon, roasted tomatoes, hashbrowns, cheese, etc. go super well with this coffee.
You can also find great pairings in any kind of sweetness and any form of chocolate that we tried, and we tried a lot.
It also does well with any form of savory lunch or dinner, and in particular works really well with pork and even more so beef or any liver. It has a great smooth texture and doesn't have any form of negative aftertaste like some coffees do.
Due to its richness butter makes it a great friend as well, and many cheeses are also great with it, not just breakfast cheeses.
We can go on, but we haven't found much so far that doesn't do well with it except items that have been pickled, but in my experience pickled foods just weren't mean to go with coffee, but maybe for some people it does.
The Seasonal Strength: While it hasn't been out long enough to compare it in all four seasons we will go ahead and say this. It works like a charm in Winter, Spring, and Summer so we're expecting it to go great in Fall too.
We believe it's the rich, full flavor with a strong chocolate flavor profile that gives it this seasonal fortitude.
Our Rating: Because of all of its versatility and amazing flavor profile we're giving Dunkin Donuts Midnight a rare 10/10 rating. This coffee is absolutely a must try if you haven't already and a must have for our coffee shelves now.
Mind blown Dunkin, thank you.
Happy sipping my fellow coffee lovers!
