Understand Mug Intention.
If you read my last post; Meaning of the Mug: Look at Your Mug - Friggen Cawfee you already have a good understanding of what mugs are made of and the options with their pros and cons.
Now we're going to look at different types of mugs and cups and their intended use. Let's be honest though. Just because something has an "intended" use doesn't mean we don't purposely go and try to use it on other things, often times just to see if we can. With that said, these intentions are just basic guidelines and any objects use is only limited to your own creativity and ideas.
The Classic Mug.
The mug that holds 8 - 12 Oz of beautiful coffee. The classic style mug is what we see most often in the cabinet, coffee shops, and store shelves. Most often you will see them made from ceramic or glass, and there is nothing special about them aside from what you might have printed on them.
The Demitasse/Espresso Cup.
Espresso cups or the French word demitasse (Which means half cup.) are tiny little fancy cups that hold about 2 - 3 Oz of coffee or espresso. We can talk about the in depth discussions of what espresso is in another post, but to sum it up very quickly it's coffee with a hard uppercut to your mouth.
They are often sold and purchased in sets so they make a great option if you're running a business with an espresso machine. Espresso cups are also often made with high insulation in mind because of their small size, and they could otherwise lose their heat quickly. Also I think they're pretty cute, and if you have a daughter like me you could play tea using an espresso cup set.
The Travel Mug.
Her our list broadens at much further because there are many different brands and styles of travel mug available. Most often you will see them made from stainless steel, are designed specifically to hold in heat and seal to prevent spilling, and are often large holding anywhere from 16 - 32oz of coffee.
Heat retention varies and now companies are even making travel mugs with built in batteries that offer Bluetooth, heating, and other smart features. Travel mugs may or may not have handles and due to their heat resistance can be put directly into your coffee maker if the size fits.
The Tumbler.
Tumblers are more so a variation of travel mugs. They often hold around the same amount of beverage, have a lid, and are focus designed around travel or sporting events such as a hike, bike ride, or jog.
The absence of a handle allows them to easily be carried in a cup holder or drink repository and their lid is most often designed to be vacuum sealed.
Mug Mastery.
Like most everyone who loves coffee you will easily find yourself buying many different mugs for your different intentions. Find what works best for you in each situation and master your mug.
